Judge David Young was elected to serve the citizens of Franklin County as a Judge in the Franklin County Municipal Court in 2011. Judge David Young serves as the Chairperson of the Specialized Docket Committee, which oversees the five specialized dockets: Drug Court, Opiate Court, Mental Health Court, Veterans Court and C.A.T.C.H. (prostitution court). The Franklin County Municipal Court is the largest Court in the State of Ohio in terms of size and cases heard.
Since taking the Bench, Judge David Young has presided over numerous jury and bench criminal and civil trials, and criminal and civil motion hearings. He vigorously resolved many of the backlogged civil cases he inherited, some of which were at least 6 years old. In his time on the bench, he has made his civil docket compliant with the Ohio Supreme Court Rules of Superintendence and has made it a priority to make timely decisions in order to further the efficiency of his docket.
In addition to being the chairperson of the Specialized Docket Committee, Judge David Young is a member of the personnel, finance and court-appointed counsel committees.
Judge David Young is active in the Franklin County community serving on the Board of Trustees of the Alvis House, a member of Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club of Dublin, Shamrock Club, Franklin County Democratic Lawyers Club and a parishioner of St. Brigid of Kildare Church. Judge David Young has coached young lacrosse players for Dublin Young Athletics. Judge David Young also has shared his experience and knowledge of the Municipal Bench with the community by having local students shadow him during a day at the courthouse, teaching lessons on the Bill of Rights at a local middle school, speaking to multiple organizations about his time on the bench and conducting many weddings both in and out of the courthouse.
Prior to serving as a Judge, David Young founded the Law Office of David Young, where his practice consisted of representing domestic and international public and private corporations and individuals. David also represented high-profile media-intense criminal defendants charged with criminal offenses such as Aggravated Murders (Death Penalty), Felonious Assault, Rape and other sex offenses, Aggravated Robbery, Drug Trafficking, RICO, Bank and Insurance Fraud, OVI/DUI and other felony and misdemeanor offenses in Federal, State and Municipal Courts throughout the State of Ohio, Los Angeles and Orange County in California. Judge David Young had been lead counsel in excess of 75 jury and bench trials while in private practice.
Before opening his own practice, Judge David Young worked as an assistant Franklin County Prosecutor, prosecuting in excess of 150 felony cases at trial and presenting several hundred cases to the Grand Jury. While in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Bar selected David to participate in 1991 Spring Trial Attorney Project: an intensive 10 week training program in Trial Practice, Procedure and Advocacy.
Judge David Young has work as a corporate associate at three premiere law firms, namely Riordan & Mckinzie (Los Angeles, California), Loeb & Loeb (Los Angeles, California) and Smith & Schnacke (Dayton, Ohio), where he maintained a general corporate and transactional practice including venture capital finance, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and motion picture finance.
Judge David Young completed his undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1983. He earned his J.D. from Washington University (St. Louis, Mo) 1986. He is admitted to practice before the U. S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, U.S. District Court for the Southern District Court of Ohio, California (inactive), Florida (inactive) and Washington D.C. He was a Public Arbitrator of FINRA Dispute Resolution and selected by peers in “Business First: The Greater Columbus Business Authority, November 2010, Top Lawyers, 2011” and for inclusion in 2011, 2012 edition The Best Lawyers in America®
Judge David Young has been married to his wife, Anna, for over 20 years, is the father of two children and resides in Dublin, Ohio. He loves to travel domestically and internationally (having run with the bulls in Pamplona, danced with the Mud Men in New Guinea, scuba dived on the Great Barrier Reef) and enjoys spending time watching his children’s sporting events, golfing, running, swimming and rooting for The Ohio State Buckeyes.
